Furniture assembly service: when to hire one and what it should include

Furniture assembly is the job people take on themselves and then look up a service for two hours in. That is fine, and it is usually the right call: the pieces that take an afternoon alone take a fraction of that with two people who have built the same unit before.

What the price is based on. Piece count and complexity, mostly. A nightstand and a sectional wardrobe are not the same job even if both arrive flat. Beyond that it is whether the piece needs anchoring to the wall, whether hardware is missing or damaged in the box, how far the boxes have to be carried, and whether the old furniture has to come apart and out first. Office systems, cubicles, and shelving runs are priced by the run rather than the item.

Which pieces are worth outsourcing. Anything tall enough to require wall anchoring, because a dresser or bookcase that is not secured to framing is a genuine hazard around kids. Beds with slat systems and center supports, where an error shows up months later as a sag. Sectionals and modular seating with alignment brackets. Office desks and cubicle systems. Outdoor furniture with torque-sensitive fasteners that strip if overtightened. Anything you own two of, since the second one is never as fast as the assembly time promises.

What actually goes wrong. Panels installed backwards, so the finished face ends up inside. Cam locks driven half a turn too far and stripped. Back panels nailed on before the box is squared, which locks a rack into the frame forever. Hardware bags counted at the end instead of the start. Every one of those is a disassembly, not a fix.

What a finished job should look like. Every fastener torqued, the piece squared and sitting flat with no rock, drawers and doors aligned and cycling smoothly, tall units anchored into studs with the correct hardware, the packaging broken down and hauled to your bin or removed, and a walkthrough before anyone leaves. Missing or damaged parts should be documented with photos so you can claim them with the manufacturer.
