When your freight needs a crate, not a box
There is a point where packaging stops being a box and starts being a build. A 900-pound machine, a stone countertop, a lab instrument, an eight-foot trade show display - none of those travel safely in corrugated cardboard, no matter how much tape goes around it. They need a crate built to their shape, weight, and center of gravity.
The difference matters most on a freight dock. Freight gets stacked, strapped, tilted, and picked up by a forklift operator who has never seen your item before and has about four seconds to decide how to lift it. A proper crate answers those questions for them: where the forks go, which side is up, how much it weighs, and whether it can be stacked.
What a real crate is made of. The outer shell is only part of it. Underneath the plywood you have a skid with runners sized to the load, internal bracing that transfers weight to the frame instead of the item, and blocking that keeps the piece from moving in any direction. Heavy equipment gets bolted or strapped directly to the skid so it cannot shift, because a 900-pound item that moves two inches in transit is now a 900-pound wrecking ball inside its own crate.
What goes inside. Protection is layered. Foam and edge protection handle shock and vibration. Moisture barriers and desiccant matter for anything crossing humid Florida air or sitting in a warehouse for a month. Anti-static wrap protects circuit boards and server gear. Artwork and glass get soft-face contact and rigid outer protection, never the reverse.
The stuff people get wrong. Undersizing the skid is the most common one - the crate holds, but the runners crush and the forklift punches through. Second is leaving air gaps and assuming the item will stay put. Third is building a crate nobody can open cleanly, so the receiver pries it apart with a crowbar and damages the contents at the finish line.
What it costs to skip it. A freight claim on a damaged machine is rarely just the repair. It is the downtime, the second shipment, and the argument with the carrier over whether the packaging was adequate - a claim carriers routinely deny when the item was not properly crated. Crating is cheap insurance against all three.
How we handle it. We build on site whenever we can, so the crate is measured to the actual item and the piece is only handled once. We mark fork entry, weight, and orientation on the outside, and build to whatever your freight carrier specifies. Send us photos and rough dimensions and you get a price before anything gets cut.
One note on scope: this is not household moving boxes. This is the oversized, heavy, fragile, and awkward material that falls outside normal household goods - the freight that shows up on a pallet, not in a moving truck.
